What To Do If Your Home Is Broken Into

Monday, 03 July 2023 08:28

According to the FBI, there are around 2.5 million burglaries every year in the United States alone. Of course, there are things you can do to protect yourself and your home from being broken into, but there is no way to guarantee that a break-in won’t happen. We’ve created a short list of what you should do in the rare case of a break-in to ensure the safety of you and your home.

What Should You Do If Your Home Is Broken Into?

According to Alarms.com, homes without a security system are 300% more likely to be broken into and burglarized. Having an alarm system installed in your home is the first step to protecting your home. But even if you’re safe and take all of the necessary precautions to protect your home from any potential break-ins, there is still a slim chance that you may fall victim to a burglary.

1) Get to Safety

Most of the time, when a burglar breaks into your home, they’re not after you. They’ll likely want valuable items such as televisions, computers, jewelry, money, or anything else they could steal in order to make a profit. Again, material items can be replaced, but your or your family’s lives cannot. Your safety should be your own priority, as well as the priority of the authorities.

Once you are in a safe space, then it’s time to call the police if you can. If you cannot call the police, remain in a safe space away from the burglars and protect yourself, and wait until the burglars have left your property or until you can get some kind of help from a neighbor.

2) Call the Police

If you have an alarm system, there’s a good chance that the alarm system will contact the necessary authorities, but just to be safe, calling the police is the first thing you’ll want to do to prevent any further threats to you or your home. Be sure to take note of anything you notice that could help police catch the perpetrator(s).

You’ll also want to try to remember anything that could help police build their case against the burglar. Don’t touch anything or change anything in your house, because there’s a chance that the perpetrator could have left DNA evidence or their fingerprints in your home.

3) Do Not Put Yourself Into Any Further Danger

We’ve already mentioned safety once on this list, but If your home gets broken into, do not do anything that would put you or your family’s lives at risk. Once the police are on their way, wait patiently in a safe area of your home or outside of your home until they arrive to help you.

Once the police have arrived, don’t go hunting down the potential burglars or criminals that have broken into your home. That is the job of the police, and they will take care of that.

4) Take Note of Any Damages

Once the police have arrived and you’re safe from any potential threats to your safety, work with the police to find any damages to your home, any missing items, or any mess that might have been left by the perpetrator. Even after the police have left and you notice something, don’t hesitate to snap a picture!

5) Prevent This From Happening Again

We’ve worked with many clients who have become victims of a home break-in, and we’ve heard firsthand how traumatic and stressful this can be for the victims. Seriously consider investing in new locks, maybe new doors, maybe new windows, and, if you haven’t already, an in-home security system.

If you have an alarm system, it is also a great idea to display a small sign outside your home to let others know that you have one. Many criminals are deterred by homes if they know there is some type of alarm system in place. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of the use of signs like these. They could save your life!

Many in-home security systems can include cameras, different settings for alarms, buttons to notify the appropriate authorities, and more. Your safety and security are our number one priority, and we can help you protect your home
