Common Security Misconceptions

Tuesday, 01 August 2023 13:11

It seems like everywhere we go, we see security systems every day. We see commercials on TV; we see security cameras in businesses; we see those small metal signs in our neighbors' yards; and more.

Today, around 39 million homes in the United States have some form of a security system in place. With a number so high, there will be many misconceptions about security systems.

We’ve created this blog to help you better understand and learn the truth about some common misconceptions regarding security systems in your home or business that you might have heard of. Take a look, and if you’re still not convinced a security system is right for you, give us a call, and we’ll help you!

Five Common Misconceptions About Security Systems

1. Security Systems Aren’t Worth Your Money

One of the biggest misconceptions about security systems is that they’re expensive and not worth your money. This could not be further from the truth. Having a security system will most likely deter criminals from your home, and for many people, the cost is worth their safety. It is hard to put a price and the safety and security of you and your family.

In the rare case of a home break-in, having security cameras to capture any culprits, or an alarm system that contacts police immediately, just might save you money if there are any damages to your home or stolen goods. Dealing with insurance companies can be a pain, but a security system just might help in the long run.

2. Security Systems Are Not for Renters

Security systems are not exclusive to homeowners. If you live in an apartment or other type of rental property, your safety is still important. You’ll want to check with your landlord first, but cameras are a great and affordable way to improve your security where you live!

With a camera set up at your apartment or rental property, you’ll be able to see when a package is delivered, when a neighbor knocks on your door, or when anyone else shows up at your door. You’ll have the security of knowing who was at your home.

3. Security Systems Are Too Difficult

If you’re bad with technology or are new to a security system, you might be worried that your security system will be too difficult to use or understand. We can assure you that that is not the case. There are a variety of different security systems that you can get installed that will work for you, and if you ever need help, contact your security provider for help!

4. Security Systems Are Too Pricey

One of the most common misconceptions about security systems is that they’re too expensive and they’re a luxury item. You’ll want to do some research to discover what kind of security systems will work for you and your home before you invest in a security system. Yes, some systems can be a little more on the expensive side, but there are plenty of options available for most budgets.

Your safety and security are not a luxury. There are plenty of choices, including alarm systems, cameras, security plans, and more, that you can find in a wide price range. Find one that meets your budget and security needs, and you’ll be all set. Check out this blog to learn more about the cost of installing a security system!

5. Security Systems Won’t Keep You Safe

One misconception about security systems is that they won’t make a big difference in your safety. We can tell you that this is simply not the case. Yes, it is true that security systems cannot stop 100% of burglars or thieves from entering your home, but if it is known your home has a security system, there’s a high chance that the burglar will be deterred.

But where is the evidence to support this? Well, a 2013 study from the University of North Carolina Charlotte worked with 422 incarcerated burglars to see what burglars' thoughts on security systems were, and the findings were not surprising.

“Around 83 percent said they would try to determine if an alarm was present before attempting a burglary, and 60 percent said they would seek an alternative target if there was an alarm on-site.” Based on this evidence, it is up to you to decide whether or not your home needs to be more secure and safe with a security system.
